Spanish Ham Care

Looking after a Spanish Ham
is very easy, there are a few basic steps to follow to maintain the hams freshness and ensure longevity.

1) Always keep the first (thicker slice) and place back on top of the exposed meat after carving.

2) Smear a little olive oil over the exposed meat, this will help prevent the ham, drying out.

3) Cover the ham with a tea-towel or muslin sock (which should allways be supplied)

Follow the above steps and keep your ham fresh, that is if it lasts long enough without being enthusiasticly devoured first!

Shionge: The Spanish ham can last for weeks if looked after, even here in Spain we follow these methods. Humidity is the main concern but well covered the ham leg should last for up to six weeks. Hams / pieces (only vacuum packed) in the fridge should last the same.

Thank you Orce but what about normal picnic ham. I stored them in a container and put them in the fridge but after about 2-3 days it sort of like turned 'slimy'.

Shionge: Normal or picnic ham will be subject to preservatives etc (depending on the type) - what kind of ham do you normaly have in the fridge? With Spanish ham the only two ingredients are are salt and time.
